About James Harrell

James Harrell grew up in Tampa's public housing community of College Hill and attended the University of Florida where he received a B.S. degree in public relations and advertising. After returning from the National Football League in 1990, Harrell worked for the Tampa Housing Authority as Director of Public Safety and Youth Sports Programs for 12 years.

While at the Tampa Housing Authority he was instrumental in helping over 200 kids attend college on Athletic and Academic Scholarships.

Involvement in the Community

Coach Harrell played football at the University of Florida before he joined the NFL. In ’79, Harrell signed with the Denver Broncos but became a Detroit Lion in the Fall of that year (’79 – ’83 & ’85 – ’86). Harrell also played for the Tampa Bay Bandits (’84 – ’85) and the Kansas City Chiefs (’87). Coach Harrell began coaching high school football in ’90 where he was Defensive Coordinator at Tampa Catholic for 3 years. He spent the next 10 years as Defensive Coordinator at Jesuit and the following 3 as Defensive Coordinator for Plant High School where he won 2 4-A State Titles. Harrell is presently the Head Football Coach at Jesuit High School. He has also held coaching internships at the pro level since 2004. Coach Harrell and his wife Maria Yoder-Harrell have three children, James III, Aryanna and Anthony.
